When to stick to CNC technology, and when to go for 3D metal printing?

The selection of technology for the manufactured elements is crucial both at the prototype development stage and during the optimization of the production process. The choice between CNC technology and metal 3D printing depends on various factors related to production characteristics, project requirements, costs and lead time.

It is better to stick to CNC technology, when:

  • our production is mass and serial of elements requiring high precision. CNC is more efficient when producing large quantities of identical parts, the automation and repeatability of the process make it economically advantageous for batch production of parts requiring tight tolerances.
  • you use traditional materials in your production, such as steel, aluminum, brass, and other metals that are commonly used in industry.
  • the elements you design are of considerable size - CNC is more suitable for processing larger and heavier elements that may be difficult to produce using 3D printing.

It is worth turning to 3D printing in metal if:

  • you are starting work on new elements, where you need to prepare a prototype, and the speed of changes makes the costs of tools and preparation of CNC machines too high.
  • your products consist of complex internal structures and geometries that are difficult or impossible to produce using traditional CNC methods.
  • it is important for you to use the material effectively by creating light, durable structures, such as trusses, which are difficult to achieve using machining methods.
  • you require the use of advanced materials and alloys that may be difficult to machine with CNC.
